TAMARAC, FL, September 08, 2011 /Cancer PR News/ -- Owners John and Jim Greer of Gold Coast Schools, Florida's largest real estate, insurance, and construction school, co-sponsored and participated in the first Children Battling Cancer ice hockey clinic, in partnership with the Florida Panthers and the Saveology.com Iceplex.
"John and I have been playing hockey for 35 years" said Jim Greer, Director/Owner of Gold Coast Schools. "We've coached the past few years and are looking forward to working with these children that might not otherwise have an opportunity to play."
Children Battling Cancer was formed by Dawn George after her son, C.J. George, went through a battle with Lymphoma. The organization raises funds through empty chemo bags that are given to local businesses, churches and schools to collect funds. CBC uses the funds to support the families of children diagnosed with cancer with financial aid and bill pay assistance. CBC also hosts a variety of sports clinics and community events and family outings throughout the year for these very special families.
After meeting through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, John Greer was asked if he would be interested in putting together a hockey clinic. Greer called Michael Yormark, President and COO of the Florida Panthers, who immediately jumped on board. The hockey clinic was quickly added to the Sports Clinics offered by CBC throughout the year. Yormark and the Florida Panthers have been supporters of LLS and various children's cancer charities for several years, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars.
"Knowing John, CJ, and Dawn, and the dedication that they have to helping kids with cancer, I knew this was something I wanted to be involved in and I'm so happy that the Panthers can help to introduce hockey to kids that otherwise wouldn't have that opportunity" said Yormark.
The clinic looks like it is going to be a huge success. "At this point we've got 35 kids registered, and five volunteer coaches to run it" said George, "with the support of the Florida Panthers, Michael Yormark, and the Greers, I know this will be a great event for our families."
