Andrew T. Turrisi III Recognized for Excellence in Medicine

Andrew T. Turrisi III is an international expert in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer

    DETROIT, MI, June 02, 2010 /Cancer PR News/ -- Andrew T. Turrisi III, MD, Specialist-in-Chief for Detroit Medical Center, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in patient care.

In the medical field for 28 years, Dr. Turrisi III serves as a specialist-in-chief for Detroit Medical Center. Specializing in small cell lung cancer treatment, he oversees eight branches and interacts with other specialists. Along with his colleagues, he has developed the standard treatment regimen for small cell lung cancer. His research and clinical focus is in the development of new strategies for the use of chemoradiotherapy in the treatment of pancreatic, lung and esophageal cancers, and in the treatment of cancer symptoms and therapy side effects. His clinical trials have been published in articles. He also acts as a professor and chair of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center in Detroit, Michigan, and as an adjunct professor of radiation oncology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Dr. Turrisi received his MD from Georgetown University (1974), his Bachelor of Science from Saint Peter's College (1970) and a board certification in radiation oncology, medical oncology and internal medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine (1977) through Georgetown University Hospital and a fellowship in Medical Oncology through the National Cancer Institute. Subsequently, he performed postdoctoral work at the National Cancer Institute from 1978 through 1980. He served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and is on the Editorial Board of a number of journals, including "The International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology and Physics." In addition, he has authored or co-authored over 95 articles about cancer research in peer-reviewed journals, edited three books and written 26 book chapters. He has attained numerous awards, including multiple listings in "Best Doctors in America" and the 2001 Distinguished Service Award from the American Board of Radiology.
