Janice E. Rahe Recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for Excellence in Elementary Education
Janice E. Rahe excels at teaching an integrated and inclusion class for third graders with special needs
ANDOVER, OH, December 20, 2010 /Cancer PR News/ -- Janice E. Rahe, Teacher at Pymatuning Valley Local Schools, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in elementary education.
Janice E. Rahe believes that "knowledge is power". Influenced by her grandmother, Jann entered into the field of special education. Through Youngstown State University, she holds not only a bachelor's degree in education, but also a master's degree in English. Jann also received a master's degree in community health education from Kent State University and spent ten years teaching health classes at Kent State University Ashtabula.
Since then Jann has accumulated over 30 years of experience in the field of special education, which includes working with adults with severe and profound mental retardation in a private residential setting, working in group homes and on job sites with people who are mildly retarded, setting up the adult basic education (ABE) class for a minimum security prison and serving as a special needs teacher in the public schools. Jann is presently in her 11th year at Pymatuning Valley Local Schools. She has taught middle school, junior high and primary school special needs classes focusing her attention on reading and language.
Jann is motivated by challenges: she faced her greatest one at the age of 40 when she was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. While in treatment, she found a saying on the church bulletin that has become one of her mantra-"When you reach out to help others, you heal yourself'. After treatment, Jann facilitated an American Cancer Society
program entitled "I Can Cope", co-founded a breast cancer support group through the local hospital and eventually founded the first rural Gilda's Club ( a free cancer support community for people with cancer and their families and friends named after comedienne Gilda Radner) in the United States. Unfortunately, after just two years the clubhouse
closed due to a lack of funding. Refusing to be deterred, Jann still helps many people who are living with cancer.
As a teacher who is passionate about working with students of all abilities, Jann would like to witness a decrease in the bureaucratic pressures placed on teachers to get students to "pass the test". Her professional affiliations include Phi Kappa Phi and the National Council of Teachers of English.
Jann is working toward being accepted into the doctoral program at Ohio University with a concentration in rural education. She aspires to teach full time at the college level before she retires from education.
