MIAMI, FL, September 30, 2009 /Cancer PR News/ -- WLRN Channel 17 Presents "ALL IN THE SAME BOAT: Stories of Breast Cancer Survivors"
THE FIRST-EVER TELEVISION DOCUMENTARY ON SOUTH FLORIDA'S ONLY BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR'S DRAGON BOAT RACING TEAM

Premiering on South Florida's PBS Station WLRN Channel 17

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21st AT 7:30 P.M.

Chances are we all know someone whose has been affected by breast cancer, will be affected by breast cancer, or perhaps that someone is you. Undoubtedly, when a person hears the words "you have breast cancer", their life takes an unexpected turn. When a woman hears those words not only are they faced with accepting they have an illness, but may feel their femininity is at risk. Our latest production ALL IN THE SAME BOAT: Stories of Breast Cancer Survivors is about spirited women who overcame their insecurities, battled breast cancer, and refused to let their diagnosis take away the joy of life.

More than that (and as the title implies), ALL IN THE SAME BOAT: Stories of Breast Cancer Survivors is half-hour television program about Saving Our Sisters (SOS), a dragon boat racing team whose members are all breast cancer survivors, and how that "twist" in their lives prompted them to embark on a journey "all in the same boat". The SOS team is trained by Harry, a Puerto Rican ex-marine who motivates the members to compete throughout Florida against younger and physically stronger teams. SOS is the only breast cancer survivors' dragon boat racing team in Miami and consists of an extraordinary team of women, from diverse backgrounds and ages.

Each person profiled has a story to tell.

Meet Gilliam, the youngest and most recent member of the team. She was only 30 years old when she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer with metastasis to her spine in three different places. She was part of a clinical trial with high doses of chemotherapy and stem cells transplant in New York. Her compelling story, full of courage and wisdom will be an eye-opener for younger women who usually don't consider themselves to be at risk for breast cancer. Gilliam is now cancer free and is an example of how early detection is vital to improve survival rates. Gilliam is just one of three incredible women storied in the documentary.

ALL IN THE SAME BOAT reaches its climax when the team trains for their biggest dragon boat race to date, The Breast Cancer Survivor World Cup Championship, which occurred in April 2009. As the team prepares for this challenge their message is clear: it's not just a race to the finish line, it's a race against breast cancer.

WLRN Public Television will also host a public screening of the documentary, ALL IN THE SAME BOAT: Stories of Breast Cancer Survivors, at the WLRN Studios (172 NE 15th Street, Miami), complete with a welcoming reception at 5:30pm, the film at 6pm; followed by complimentary tours on-demand.

The evening promises to be memorable with the Saving Our Sisters (SOS), dragon boat racing team making a special appearance!
