Mary Galeos Honored for Supporting Women in the Fight Against Breast Cancer

Mary Galeos provides mammography and ultrasound services to the women of Sussex County, New Jersey and surrounding counties

Lafayette, NJ, July 18, 2009 /Cancer PR News/ -- Mary Galeos, President & Founder of the Sussex County Women's Forum, a non-profit breast cancer organization that provides public services including free mammograms and breast ultrasound diagnosis, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in fundraising.

Mary Galeos was inspired to establish the Sussex County Women's Forum after watching a group of her friends, with families of their own to tend to, rally around and care for a woman with breast cancer. Mary thought how each of us, at any given time, can suffer from unexpected life events and feel alone, adrift and stranded, as if on an island. She wants women who feel stranded to be able to look out from their 'islands' and see themselves surrounded by a bay of faces who love and support them. Furthermore, she wants women to see that the bay of supporters spill out into an ocean of faces of people, who, although they may not know them and may never meet them, are working in small ways to do what they can to help. To this end, Mary raises funds by hosting trail running events and spa nights. Before each race, Mary tells her runners, 'On days when you feel you can't do anything right and you can't seem to please anyone - when you question your self-worth - remember that you matter here! You matter now! You matter to me! You are my ocean!' Ms. Galeos realizes that there are many organizations that raise huge amounts of money for research. For her, however, the research seems meaningless if women are not getting mammograms. This belief prompted her to narrow her vision and develop a free mammogram program. In the future, she hopes to have enough funding to provide women with free breast magnetic resonance images, in addition to mammograms and ultrasounds.

Before establishing the Sussex County Women's Forum, Mary wortked as a licensed practical nurse for the Urgent Care Center (1986-1987); Riverside Hospital (1973-1986); Rahway Hospital (1967-1972) and Point Pleasant Hospital (1966-1967). She attributes her success to her persistence, sense of humor, patience and to the support she receives from her loving friends.
